Local AM Nick Ramsay is joining Network Rail this week to help raise awareness amongst the public about the importance of rail safety.
This week (25th September to 1st October) is Rail Safety Week, and Nick shares Network Rail’s concerns about the increasing number of people taking risks on our railways.
Speaking today Nick said: “I’m informed that an average of one person every hour risks their lives by trespassing on the railway, and there’s also an upward trend of “near misses” involving pedestrians at level crossings.
“In 2016/17 alone, 27 people died while trespassing on the railway and, sadly, young people are more likely to take risks.
"I welcome the efforts Network Rail is taking to try to impress on everyone how dangerous our railway lines are. Anything that can be done to educate young people about the dangers is to be welcomed.”
