Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay questioned the First Minister in Plenary on Tuesday, asking whether the Welsh Government had plans to reduce the burden of business rates on Welsh Businesses. This question followed the news of additional funding coming to Wales over three years as a result of the recent UK Government’s budget announcements.
The UK Government plans to provide extra support for businesses in England, reducing business rates for businesses with a rateable value of up to £50.000 by a third.
Nick asked the First Minister if he would give a similar commitment to further reduce the business rates burden for Welsh businesses.
The First Minister declined to provide any assurance on the subject stating, “What I can say is that we are awaiting the exact details of the business rates relief fund that’s proposed in England, because, so far, those details have not been made available.”
Speaking today Nick said, “Rest assured, I will continue to press the Welsh Government to provide further rate relief support to help our struggling local businesses. It’s totally wrong that support provided across the border in England is so much more generous.”
