Member of the Welsh Parliament for Monmouth, Nick Ramsay, has welcomed news that the Welsh Government will be introducing reduced 20 mph pilot schemes in eight areas of Wales later this year, and two of these areas are in Monmouthshire.
A survey carried out by Welsh Government last November showed strong support for a plan to introduce a reduced speed limit of 20mph in residential areas in Wales and especially in households with children. There was also a high level of agreement that proper enforcement by the police would be needed.
Speaking today Nick said: “ I understand that a national roll-out is planned in April 2023 but before then there will be eight pilot areas where the 20 mph limit will be trialled on restricted roads currently having a 30mph limit and street lighting.
“ Two of the eight pilot areas are in Monmouthshire – Abergavenny and Severnside. The pilots will have a phased start from summer 2021 until the end of the year.
“ We will have to see how the pilot schemes proceed before the nationwide new limit is imposed in 2023. Hopefully the trials will show that reducing speed limits reduces serious accidents and helps save lives.”
